"When you wake up every day, you have two choices. You can either be positive or negative; an optimist or a pessimist. I choose to be an optimist. It's all a matter of perspective."
- Harvey Mackay
From the time I was a wee little lad until my late 20s, I had a PhD in sarcasm and I used it every chance I could. Seriously, Dr. House and Ron Swanson could only aspire to reach the level of snark I was able to achieve at the drop of a hat.
The cartoon below neatly summarizes what my parental advice would have been if I had kids. I do have to admit that for a brief time, having that attitude was actually fun. However, as I aged and matured I realized it was really no way to go through life.
A positive attitude is essential to joy, happiness and progress. This state of well-being can bring love, light, hope, and enthusiasm to you and others around you. It's also so much more productive than tearing someone else down to try and make yourself look better.
Do we really have the ability to choose positivity instead of negativity? Just like any other thought you have in your mind at any given time, you have the ability to accept it or to change it. You have the authority over your own mind. It truly is a wonderful thing to know that at any moment you have the ability, the freedom, and the power to choose what you want to aim for and how you want to think about your life.
Change your story and change your mindset to change your life.
Life is made up of the continuous stream of choices we make. Knowing that you have the power to think and to choose what to focus on allows you to consciously take control and to build a stronger, better version of yourself.
Life is a mix of both easy and hard parts. Sometimes it may seem like life will knock you down and it will be waiting for you to get back up just so it can knock you down again but we have the power within ourselves to stop feeling helpless and to choose how we want to experience life. We have the ability to fight for change within ourselves, to grow and to improve, to be grateful, and to continue to try.
We may not be able to completely turn our moods off and on like a light switch but we can consistently work to be more positive and just like pretty much anything, the more practice that we get at it the more consistent and automatic it can become.
“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.”
- Willie Nelson
